Very good condition hickory wooden shafted Wright & Ditson splice neck driver. Has quite an elongated head shape indicating a transitional wood. Simply stamped, “Wright & Ditson” on the crown. Vintage is circa 1900, certainly dates 1893 to 1895 era. It is very hard to find American made clubs from the mid 1890’s or earlier. A mere 5 years later golf had literally exploded in America and clubs were being made in very large numbers compared to the 1895 and earlier clubs. Nice old spliced neck or scare neck golf club with no chips or cracks to the wooden head, neck, or shaft. Original wooden shaft has a slight to moderate bend and is without chips or cracks. Shaft has the ‘Wright & Ditson’ stamp with the very tiny block lettering. This size shaft stamp indicates a very early production date. Between the shape of this club head and the tiny shaft stamp, this club dates circa 1895 or slightly earlier. Total club length is 42 3/8. Lie is quite flat which is also indicative of earlier clubs from the 1890’s and earlier. Topped with a very nice newer intact sheepskin grip over underlisting. Grip is in the proper period style. There is a small dent at the edge of the face on the heel side. This area is actually an old period repair where a wooden dowel has been inserted to fix an imperfection in the wood such as a knot. This fix does not indicate a compromised club head. This head is absolutely solid. This imperfection detracts very little from this beautiful club and is really just a part of this clubs history. I would imagine it was played well after this repair was done. Splice head woods gave way to the socket head woods at the turn of the century. This is a nice original vintage hickory wood shaft KRO-FLITE golf club. The wood shaft is straight with no cracks and it is wrapped with the original leather grip. The club head reads “KRO-FLITE with the flying crow, Reg US Pat off, Professional Golfers Assn with a golf club, custom made, sweet spot”. The bottom of the iron has the number 7. The face has straight lines with a design in the center and the club has wear from usage. The club is in as found condition and has not been cleaned. This is a nice vintage golf club to add to your collection.
