1986 Ping Eye 2 LH Blue Dot Irons — 3-LW — NZ+ Stiff Shafts — USGA Legal
Up for auction today is one set of left handed Ping Eye 2 Square Groove irons, 3-LW (10 irons in all).
I placed a call to Ping to learn more about this set of irons, and below is what I found. The bulk of this set was born on December 19, 1986. It was cast as a blue dot (1* upright) set with NZ+ shafts, serial # 18506. The 4 iron was apparently lost, and was replaced with a 1986 white dot 4 iron, serial # 10527. (Somebody painted the white dot blue, I’m guessing for cosmetic reasons…so it would "look right" with the rest of the set.) The white dot would put the 4 iron at 3* upright, but judging by eye, the lie 4 iron appears to have been adjusted to match the set. The matching sand and lob wedges were later cast and created by Ping as “fill-ins” to complete the set…the lob wedge in 1998, and the sand wedge in 2001. So, to be crystal clear, while the serial numbers of the sand and lob wedges match the set, one would not be allowed to use these two clubs in USGA sanctioned events, as they were cast by Ping after April 1, 1990. Please refer to table and pictures to see the present state and condition of this set.

The shaft bands on all of the irons that do not have ZZ Lite shafts are missing. The NZ+ is a shaft I am not familiar with, but they appear to be original, and they appear to have a step pattern that’s very similar to True Temper Dynamic Gold S300U.

With the GROOVE SHARPENER you can sharpen your grooves sharper then factory-fresh.
It only takes a few minutes to sharpen a wedge, but the more time you put in it, the better the results. You can also use the tool on the golf course to clean the grooves after each shot.
The GROOVE SHARPENER is made of heat treated tool steel (A-2) which measures a hardness of 61 Rockwell. Because the tool is so hard it will not loose its cutting edge like other groove tools. The GROOVE SHARPENER is designed to remove metal from the side of the groove which produces the sharp edge.

Ping Eye Two Lob and Sand Wedge (Beryllium Copper). This is the same model that Payne Stewart used to hit his lob wedge shot into the 72nd hole of the 1999 US Open. His beryllium ping eye two lob wedge is on display at his boyhood home course in Springfield Missouri.
The sand wedge is in excellent condition. The lob wedge has a very small and shallow nick on the leading edge but otherwise is also in good condition.

You are bidding on a Ping Eye 2 Square Groove Lob Wedge. It has the Ping ZZ Lite shaft and the Ping Diamond Grip which is slick and should be replaced. Grooves look good and spin the ball really nice. As you probably know, this is the Square Groove Model that is USGA and PGA Tour Legal due to the Karsten Solheim Lawsuit in the late 80s. Ping Eye 2s are now the only square groove clubs legal to play in all USGA and PGA Tour events. Shipping and Insurance will be $15 to Continental U.S. Thank You and Happy bidding!

ITEM: Ping Eye2 Plus Iron Set 3-PW Serial #468008A
CONDITION: Used
COMMENTS: In great shape, probably an 7 out of 10, IMO. This is an original pre-1990 Ping Eye2 Plus iron set with square grooves and are legal for use under the 2010 USGA Groove Rule. Grooves on the irons are in great shape. This is a rare set of Eye2 Plus irons without the “+” symbol in the cavity denoting the newer “second generation” eye2 model but with the square grooves that are legal under the 2010 USGA groove change. This set is the Eye2+ because of the scalloped trailing edge on the sole, a slightly longer blade length, increased heel/toe weighting, and a softer toe profile.

Beware of post-1990 Eye2 wedges, they are denoted with a “+” symbol indicating the second generation Eye2+ model and Eye2 models with a tiny drill hole mark in the cavity near the toe. These Ping clubs are not legal under the new USGA groove rule. Best way to know?…Look up the serial number! SEE MY PICTURES ABOVE TO IDENTIFY POST 1990 EYE2 CLUBS DEEMED ILLEGAL UNDER THE 2010 GROOVE RULE!!!
